Law enforcement is looking forward to removing dangerous drivers from the roads this holiday season and they have already begun.

The Georgia state highway patrol kicked off their campaign for cracking down on speeding and driving under the influence last night. In just a couple of hours, they issued 148 citations in Georgia and 26 in Alabama. Four people were locked up for DUI’s and 16 for suspended licenses.

Officials say expect to see a high percentage of law enforcement on both Georgia and Alabama interstates and roadways until the labor day weekend passes.

“Before you crank that engine up, click that seat belt just by clicking your seat belt you increase your chances of surviving a crash by 50%. And of course don’t drink and drive and don’t drive aggressively. There’s no sense in tail-gaiting someone just to try and get there 5 seconds earlier. Let’s enjoy the rest of the life we have,“ says Tony Bobbitt of the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Bobbitt says they choose to do “Hands Across the Border” during the Labor Day week because that is when the most fatalities occur.

In 2007 more than 13,000 people died nationwide in highway crashes involving drivers with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.
